When many people think about Muay Thai, they see only the punching, the kicking, the elbow and knee. But for us Thai people, Muay Thai is not only a sport. It is culture, it is history, it is something come from our ancestors long time already. I want to share with you what I learn, not only from watching but from living in Thai temple for 29 years, seeing many young boys train with respect and discipline.
A Short History From the Old Kingdoms
Muay Thai begin many hundred years ago, maybe more than 700. In the old time, Thailand was not call Thailand yet. We have Sukhothai, Ayutthaya, Thonburi, Rattanakosin. Soldiers must learn hand‑to‑hand fighting to protect the kingdom.
In the old day they train many thing – Muay Boran for empty hand, and Krabi Krabong for weapon. In Krabi Krabong we have idea call “Nawa Arwut,” mean nine weapon. It talk about sword, staff, spear and many weapon of soldier.
Some Kru (teacher) also explain Muay Boran like this – body become weapon. Fist like sword, elbow like axe, knee like spear. It is not official name for Muay Thai today, but it show how Thai people think about fighting long time ago. We use what we have, even our own body.
In Ayutthaya period, Muay Thai become very famous. People fight in festival, in temple fair, in celebration. But still, it is not only for fun. It teach discipline, courage, and loyalty to the king. Many Thai boys grow up with Muay Thai same like they grow up with rice and fish sauce.
Muay Thai and Buddhism
Maybe you wonder why a ex-monk talk about Muay Thai. But in Thailand, Muay Thai and Buddhism stay very close. Many fighters come to temple before big fight. They ask blessing from monk, they offer flowers, they meditate for calm mind. When I was monk, I bless many young fighters. I tell them, “Fight with heart clean, no anger, no hate.” Because Muay Thai is not about destroy someone. It is about control yourself.
The Rituals: Spirit of Respect
If you watch Muay Thai, you see many ritual before the fight. Some foreigners think it is only show, but actually it is very deep meaning.
Wai Kru
Before fight, the boxer do Wai Kru. “Wai” mean bow, “Kru” mean teacher. So they bow to teacher, to parents, to all people who teach them in life. In Thailand, teacher is very important. Without teacher, no knowledge. Without knowledge, no Muay Thai.
Many Thai people say “If you don’t respect your Kru, you cannot be strong.” I also believe like this.

Ram Muay
After Wai Kru, boxer do Ram Muay, a slow dance. Every gym have different style. Some show story of old kingdom, some show animal spirit, some show respect to Buddha. When I watch Ram Muay, I feel peaceful. It remind me of meditation – slow, mindful, every movement have purpose.

Mongkhon and Pra Jiad
Boxer wear Mongkhon (headband) and Pra Jiad (armbands). Mongkhon is bless by monk or teacher. It protect the fighter, not only body but mind. Pra Jiad come from old time when mother tear her cloth to tie on son’s arm before he go to war. It mean love and protection.
The Music of Muay Thai (Pi Muay): The Heartbeat of the Fight

Many foreigner think Muay Thai music is only background sound, but actually it is very important. We call it Pi Muay. The music come from old tradition, same like the ritual. It help the fighter stay calm, stay focus, and also show respect to the spirit of the ring.
The instrument are simple but very strong feeling:
- Pi Java – a kind of oboe, make the long crying sound
- Klong Khaek – drum that give the rhythm
- Ching – small cymbal that keep the timing
The Music Change During the Fight. The music start slow during Wai Kru and Ram Muay, because this part is for respect. It is like meditation — slow, mindful, peaceful.
But when the fight begin, the drum become faster. The ching become sharp. The pi become louder. It is like the music breathe with the fighter. When the action get strong, the music also get strong. When the fighter slow down, the music slow down too.
Some people don’t know this, but the music also protect the fighter. In old belief, the sound of pi and drum can chase away bad spirit and bring good luck.
The Heart of Muay Thai
Many people think Muay Thai is violent. But actually, Muay Thai teach you to be humble. When you train, you sweat, you fall, you stand up again. You learn patience. You learn to control ego. You learn to respect opponent. In Thailand we say, “Fight in ring, not in life.”
When I was monk, I see many fighters come to temple after they lose. They feel shame. But I tell them, “Lose is teacher also.” In Buddhism we say everything is impermanent. Win or lose, it will pass. What stay is your character.
Why Muay Thai Still Important Today
Now Muay Thai is famous around the world. Many people train for fitness, for self‑defense, for fun. But I hope they also learn the culture behind. If you understand the rituals, the history, the respect, then you understand the real Muay Thai.
Muay Thai is not only how strong your punch. It is how strong your heart.
I am not fighter, but I am Thai man who grow up with Muay Thai around me. I see how it shape young people into good person. I hope when you watch Muay Thai next time, you see more than the fight. You see the tradition, the spirit, the beauty.
