Porto

🇵🇹 Portugal (June 2026 Postcard)

Porto sits in the north of Portugal, along the banks of the Douro River, not far from where the river winds inland toward the vineyards of the Douro Valley. It’s a city shaped by water, stone, and centuries of trade.

Porto is a city that has a down to earth authentic vibe, that resonates throughout the city, through the cobbled winding streets of the historic Ribera district you will find pleasant surprises round every corner.

One thing I noticed are the many textures of Porto. The buildings aren’t polished; they’re weathered from years of history. Granite walls, narrow stairways, balconies with laundry drifting in the breeze – everything carries the marks of time. Even the famous azulejos, those blue‑and‑white tiles, feel like pages from a long-ago storybook. Some are pristine, others chipped, but together they create a visual rhythm that’s unmistakably Portuguese.

Inside São Bento Station, the walls are covered in vast tile panels depicting battles, coronations, and everyday rural life. I stood there longer than I expected, watching commuters rush past scenes that most museums would guard behind glass. Porto treats its art as part of daily life, not something to be tucked away.

Then you round a corner and the whole waterfront appears. The Douro stretches out in front of you, calm and confident, with boats drifting past and the riverbanks lined with colour. It’s a wonderful place to stroll on a sunny afternoon, watching the reflections shift across the water. Across the water, the Port wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia line the opposite bank. I toured one of the older lodges, where the air smelled faintly of oak and time. Crossing one of Porto’s six bridges gives you wide, generous views over the river – especially at sunset, when the city turns a deep, warm gold.

And then there are the small moments: the sound of church bells echoing through steep streets and the smell of fresh pastéis de nata from a corner bakery. I’ve been given strict instructions from Mimi to sample many more pastries before I leave!
